Basel is a heavy sans serif font that began as a revival of the metal type Spartan Black, an American copy of Futura developed in 1936, but ultimately took on a character of its own during the process. The upright strokes are flared slightly, as in Optima; at smaller sizes this feature is almost undetectable, at larger there is a unique optical play between the letter spaces. Basel can be best used for display, identities, and headline copy.
